Inspiration

At the center of this idea are the Science Museum’s objects accompanied by the personal memorabilia. In an ambition to deepen the intimate personal feel in the visual framework I turned to old home movies for inspiration. The purpose for using traits from this inspiration was to capture fragments of that nostalgic aestethic, but let the films and objects take the center of the scene.

This experience needed a visual introduction that could signify a genesis. When looking at inspiration I did not wanted it to echo another colonial logic, the one of Creatio ex nihilo: creation out of nothingness. Nor start with the more scientific big bang, but rather, a big bounce. It was therefore named »Creatio ex profundis«, yet it imitates a scientific depiction of a repetitive cosmic event. The solution was an animated title.
Sound

One important part with this idea is the auditive aspect. Vernacular culture plays a significant role for cultural identities, but also regional.
In my example I have chosen to include a few voice mails of people with different accents, someone imitating an accent, an old man playing »The Sea Eagle Waltz« on accordion, by Evert Taube a famous Swedish ballad tradition-musician.
If this project were to be extended, a selection of background music would be available, also from a regional perspective. The one included now is just an old collage by myself playing harmonica and piano.
Feedback from Yara Hindawi
Yara talked about how the Iphone’s photo library can recognize faces, occasions, etc and that sort of function could be integrated with my app. She said that it would then be “less labour intensive for the user” to match the objects with the personal memorabilia. A brilliant idea.
On a UX level, Yara suggested a little more text, to let the user know what’s going on and lead the user on a journey.
