Week 10: Case Studies Exploring Trends and Outputs of Influential Studios

Jerome Knebusch https://www.jeromeknebusch.net/ who is the founder of Poem: http://www.poem-editions.com/ but also works at ANRT in Nancy https://anrt-nancy.fr/en/ . Knebusch was one of the creators of the beautiful and well researched book Gotico Antiquahttps://anrt-nancy.fr/anrt-22/en/publications/gotico-antiqua-proto-roman-hybrid

For me Jerome Knebusch is a great example of someone who balances their research with practical projects and lets the one feed the other.

Ruben Pater http://www.untold-stories.net/

Ruben Pater is someone looking into the power asymmetries represented by graphic design. Although his writing can be at times a bit unpolished, he approaches interesting subjects and manages to make them available for many.

Ideas

Ephemera in macro

An investigation into the small mundane/invisible visual expressions–blown up in size, in a book? Exhibition? For example, post stamps.

inspiration could be Dawid, This is a photograph.

Book on the development of a certain script or typeface
similar to Poem Editions book on the Gotico Antiqua. Would probably have a clear book historical approach, and could possibly visually dissect and/or deconstruct letterforms as a visual response?

Spitzmüller’s research in relation to a practical outcome

Use the research of Spitzmüller to visualize a response, something to make his approach more tangible for a wider audience.

Series of fanzine / essays / booklets

Of values in visual communication, the values can differ depending on the theme of the issue. It would be based on the research I have done for my phd proposal and break it up, mainly to make it more understandable for me but also to break down that research and make it accessible for more.

Develop Temporal Tensions
but include more academic research

Reflection

For me, my future work will probably be more about research than making. I am starting to slowly float away from the practical part of graphic design. But I have always been heavier on the theoretical side and weaker on the practical. Then I have practiced to connect those two better, and that is something I have focused on when teaching as students often struggle with making those connections of brain and hand. I think, when working with graphic design, being able to make that connection can be really helpful. Dorte Nielsen’s concept of creating connections is really a great practical approach to a similar problem. It would be great to be able to take that heavy research and turn it into something tangible that could be at students fingertips.
